Home automation is a great way to save time in your day. Do you turn a your front light on and off every day? If you do you can easily spend 1 minute a day, every day turning it on and off. Automating that task adds 365 minutes back into your life each year for other things. What would you do with those 6 hours each year? Set up more automations of course.

The Makers Mashup team has tested a number of different devices for home automation of 3D printers, home devices, etc. In our testing we have found the Zigbee protocol to be the most open and widely supported in Home Assistant, Google and Alexa ecosystems. You only require a Hub (Or a USB Dongle) and all the devices act as repeaters in your home. This along with the flexibility of wide platform support make them easy to adopt, integrate and working in your home. While many devices are “google” and “alexa” ready, they don’t always offer integration (easily) with Home Assistant for power automations. This is why we recommend getting a dongle like the Conbee II and using Zigbee across your home. Here are some suggested devices we found very hepful in automating our home.
